Zhu Xinjian (1953-2014), born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, was a leading representative of contemporary Chinese ink painting artists.

In 1988, he resigned from his public office and went to Paris to live as a full time artist, and returned to China in 1993. In his early years, he created comic strips. Later, he used traditional ink painting and is considered to have directly sparked the "New Literati Painting" movement in the 1980s and has influenced the later "Cynical Realism".

As one of the representative painters of the ’85 New Wave Art Movement (The '85 Art Movement also known as the ‘85 New Wave) and "New Literati Painting", his painting style is vivid and straightforward, with childlike brushstrokes, often accompanied by humorous inscriptions, which complement each other perfectly. Although his subjects cover flowers, birds, insects, fish, and heroes, he mainly focuses on charming female figures.

His works have won the Silver Award at the 6th National Art Exhibition and the National Children's Painting Excellence Award for "Eliminating the Three Evils". Zhu Xinjian has also served as the character designer for Shanghai Animation Film Studio and CCTV animated films such as "The Rat's Wedding", "The Adventures of Jin Yuan Kingdom", and "Pipilu and Luxixi". His character design for "Beauty Contest" earned the Shanghai Animation Film Studio Excellence Award and a Golden Rooster Award nomination.

He has held solo exhibitions in Belgium, France, and other countries. His works have been collected by institutions including the National Art Museum of China, the National Library of France, the Royal Museums of History of Belgium, and the School of Fine Arts in Paris.

Zhu Xinjian has published numerous art catalogues, and his works are widely recognized. They frequently appear at auctions and galleries in Hong Kong and mainland China, and are also collected by museums and private collections.

朱新建（1953—2014），出⽣于江苏南京，是中国具代表性的当代⽔墨画艺术家。1978 年考⼊南京艺术学院，后留校任教；1988 年辞去公职，旅居巴黎，成为⾃由职业画家，1993 年归国。早年创作连环画，后以传统⽔墨绘画，被视为直接引发 80 年代“新⽂⼈画”运动，并影响后来的“玩世现实主义”。

作为 85 新潮及「新⽂⼈画」代表画家之⼀，其画⾵⽣动直率、笔触天真，常配以诙谐题字，相得益彰。题材虽涵盖花⿃虫⿂、草莽英雄，但以⾵情⼥性形象为主。

作品曾获第六届全国美术作品展银奖；《除三害》获全国少儿图画优秀奖。朱新建还曾任上海美术电影厂、中央电视台动画⽚《⽼⿏嫁⼥》《⾦元国历险记》《⽪⽪鲁与鲁⻄⻄》等作品的⼈物造型设计，其中《选美记》造型设计获上海美术电影厂优秀奖及⾦鸡奖提名。

他曾在⽐利时、法国等地举办个展，作品被中国美术馆、法国国家图书馆、⽐利时皇家历史博物馆、巴黎美术学院等机构收藏。

朱新建出版过众多画集，作品常⾒于⾹港及内地拍卖与画廊，亦被美术馆及私⼈收藏。
