Play Gravity泼赖引力潑賴引力

Kiang Malingue is pleased to present Play Gravity, Yirui Jia's first solo exhibition with the gallery at its Hong Kong location.

Over the last five years, Jia has presented a series of boisterous, multilayered paintings driven by unplanned cadenza and relentless overpainting, building a highly theatricalised world that is colourful and exuberant. She understands painting as a process of impulse and detour, commanding recurring characters such as an alien-like skeleton and a heroic one-eyed bride who freely changes into a warrior, an astronaut, or an untamed femme fatale.

For Play Gravity, Jia has created over twenty new paintings that dilate on the spirited, volatile, and playfully expressive aspects of her art. A dozen paintings depict an owl, or an assembly of nocturnal birds soaring and perching against a vehemently vibrant backdrop. These cross-eyed, comical raptors bisect a reclining female figure in Picnic (2025), nesting a slapdash reality that defies gravity. In Storm Eye (2025), her frenzied brushstrokes transform the heroine into a fiery, cyclopean monument-figure, whose gaping maw resembles a violent volcanic crater.

Informed by the history of birds in art and literature, Jia introduces birds into her practice as a vehicle to explore non-anatomical, non-representational possibilities. The playfully constructed owls dart and weave in curious gestures, scattering their plumage onto other things, gnawing open a weightless, disorienting world.

Play Gravity also revisits some of Jia's favourite subjects: winged skeletons, traffic cones as prominent signifiers of groundedness, and the shapeshifting femme fatale inspired by the Hong Kong film 92 Legendary La Rose Noire. These elements perform a nocturnal vitality that is spontaneous, uninhibited, mischievous, and victorious.

过去五年间，贾一瑞通过即兴乱笔和反复的重绘覆盖，创作了一系列狂野且层次丰富的绘画作品。她将直觉与生命经验相融，建立起一个色彩斑斓、高度戏剧化的生动画中世界。她把绘画视作情感冲动与迂回歧路的结合，在画中塑造出如外星人般的骷髅，以及反复出现的英勇“独眼新娘”——她时而是战士，时而是宇航员，时而是狂野不羁的女杀手。

在《泼赖引力》中，贾一瑞带来的二十余幅新作，聚焦于其艺术实践中激昂、多变及充满“玩乐（Play）”意味的维度。十数幅作品描绘了猫头鹰的形象：它们在色彩激烈的构图中飞翔或伫立。在《野餐》（2025）中，憨态可掬的猛禽分割了吹奏横笛的女性，斑驳的画面强调了羽毛的凌乱感，仓促间搭建出一种抵抗引力的现实。在《风暴眼》（2025）中，艺术家狂乱的笔触则将人物转化为炽烈狰狞的独眼巨人，暴戾如火山口。

受艺术与文学史中鸟类形象的启发，贾一瑞以猫头鹰为题，探索非解剖学与非再现艺术的潜能。肆意拼装的猫头鹰在画中闪转腾挪，撕扯出一个充满混沌的失重世界。

同时，展览也复述了艺术家的经典主题：有翼骷髅、指示引力存在的交通锥，以及挪用自香港电影的女杀手形象“黑玫瑰”。这些符号为贾一瑞笔下的人物提供了施展的维次，实践出一种自由、无拘无束、狡黠且英武的夜行生命力。
